Recommended Omega-3 intakes:

1. General Health Support for Adults

500 mg (EPA plus DHA) per person daily

Source: Position of the American Dietetic Association and the Dietitians of Canada . Journal of the American Dietetic Association, vol. 207, pgs 1599-1611 (2007).

Note: One ‘super omega-3’ capsule/day will provide 990 mg of (EPA plus DHA) daily which is a common daily intake level in Japan (which has one of the longest life expectancies on earth). For those preferring to average 500 mg (EPA plus DHA) daily, one ‘super omega-3 capsule’ can be taken every second day. It is advised to take your omega-3 supplementation at or near the time of one of your daily meals.

2. People with Heart Disease

900 mg (EPA plus DHA) per person daily

Source:

American Heart Association Dietary Guidelines (Revision 2000): A Statement for Healthcare Professionals from the Nutrition Committee of the American Heart Association . Circulation, vol. 102, pgs. 2284-2299 (2000). “Consumption of one fatty fish meal per day (or alternatively, a fish oil supplement) could result in an omega-3 intake (ie, EPA and DHA) of approx. 900 mg/day, an amount shown to beneficially affect coronary heart disease rates in patients with coronary disease’.

Note: one ‘super omega-3’ capsule/day will provide 990 mg of (EPA plus DHA) daily.

3. Blood Triglyceride-Lowering

2000 - 3000 mg (EPA plus DHA) per person daily

Source :

The American Heart Association ( reference: Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis, and Vascular Biology, vol. 23: pgs. 151-152 (2003)) have indicated that 2000-4000 mg of (EPA plus DHA) daily can significantly lower blood fat levels in the form of triglyceride . An elevated triglyceride level is a very significant risk factor for cardiovascular disease and associated mortality. Even moderately-elevated levels of circulating triglyceride , which are highly prevalent in the population including many people on statin treatment for cholesterol-lowering , carry a significantly increased risk for heart disease. Typically, the degree of triglyceride- lowering amounts to approx. 7-10 % per 1000 mg of (EPA plus DHA) such that 2000 mg or 3000 mg can be expected to lower blood triglyceride by approx. 14-20 % and 21-35 % , respectively (see dhaomega3.org). Such triglyceride-lowering is attained within 3-4 weeks and can be maintained for years pending ongoing supplementation.

Note: One, two, or three capsules of ‘super omega-3’ per day will provide almost exactly 1000, 2000, and 3000 mg per day of (EPA plus DHA).

4. Pregnancy and Lactation

Recommendation of at least 200 to 300 mg/day of DHA omega-3 during pregnancy and lactation.

Source:

World Association of Perinatal Medicine advises on a minimum intake of 200 mg DHA/day (Journal of Perinatal Medicine , vol. 36 : pgs. 5-14 (2008)) while the ISSFAL Workshop held at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland recommended a minimum intake of 300 mg DHA/day during pregnancy and lactation ( Source: Journal of the American College of Nutrition, vol. 18: pgs. 487-489 (1999)). Is in noted that levels of approx. 0.35 % of milk fat as DHA are common now in infant formula. Daily intakes of DHA at 200-300 mg can be expected to elevate DHA levels in breast milk to approx. 0.35 % of milk fat (from the much lower DHA levels as found in North American breast milk at present where average daily intakes of DHA are only approx.. 80 mg/day). Target DHA levels of approx. 0.35 % have been recommended from various sources.

Note: One capsule of ‘super omega-3’ per day will provide 330 mg of DHA/day.

5. Rheumatoid Arthritis

More than 20 peer-reviewed clinical trials have found improvements in symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis when using EPA/DHA as complementary supplementation as pointed out by Dr. Joel Kramer of the Albany Medical College and the Center of Rheumatology , Albany, NY. He pointed out that daily intakes of 3000 mg of EPA plus DHA over an interval of 12 weeks are needed to support a benefit. He also noted that 10 capsules/day would be needed if the supplement had only 300 mg of (EPA plus DHA) per capsule whereas only 3 capsules/day would be required with approx. 1000 mg of (EPA plus DHA) per capsule.

Note: Three capsules of the ‘super omega-3’ capsule will provide almost exactly 3000 mg of (EPA plus DHA) per day.
